Building benefits

In-service life

average rating is 3 out of 5

In-Service Life

Green roofs protect the roof waterproofing system from temperature variations, exposure to ultraviolet rays and mechanical damage [1], extending its in-service life up to 30 to 50 years [2], helping to reduce buildings maintenance costs.

Energy savings

Heating

average rating is 3 out of 5

Cooling

average rating is 3 out of 5

Energy Savings

Green roofs help increasing roofs thermal insulation, reducing heating in winter. They also reduce the roofs surface temperature reducing the building's cooling needs in summer. Therefore they help reducing the energy consumption of HVAC systems up to 50% aproximately [1]. However, their effect depends on the building characteristics  (e.g. location, thermal insulation, type of windows, etc.).

Energy Savings

Green walls help increasing roofs thermal insulation, reducing heating in winter. They also reduce the roofs surface temperature reducing the building's cooling needs in summer promoting energy savings of  34% (green facades) to 59% (living walls), approximately [1]. However, this reduction depends on the building characteristics  (e.g. orientation, location, thermal insulation, etc.).

Sound insulation

average rating is 3 out of 5

Sound Insulation

The green roof contributes to the building's sound insulation, reducing noise transmission from outside to inside between 5 to 20 dB, depending on the frequencies and the roof characteristics [1].

Property value

average rating is 3 out of 5

Property value

Green roofs provide additional green space in buildings. They can improve aesthetically the building's envelope or offer additional recreation space. They can increase the property value by 8%, on average, depending on its location [1].

Urban benefits

Urban temperature reduction

average rating is 3 out of 5

Urban temperature reduction

Green roofs increase air humidity and cool the surrounding air, creating a microclimate that helps to reduce the outdoor air temperature between 1º and 2ºC [1], fighting against the urban “heat island effect”.

Air Quality

average rating is 3 out of 5

Air quality

Vegetation helps filteing dust and polluting particles from the air, having the capacity to sequester 375g of carbon per m2 of green cover [1]. In addition it releases oxygen. The substrate filters nitrates and other pollutants contained in rainwater.

Urban Noise Reduction

average rating is 3 out of 5

Urban noise reduction

Green roofs  absorb sound waves and reduce sound reflection up to 10 dB [1], depending on the sound frequency. This effect is especially important in areas located close to noise sources, such as airports, industries or highways.

Water retention

average rating is 3 out of 5

Water reduction

Green roofs retain an average of 33% to 81% of the rainwater, delaying the emission of surplus water into the rainwater pipelines, reducing the risk of flooding. The water holding capacity increases with greater substrate depths [1].
The calculation of this benefit refers to flat systems. Slope affects maximum holding capacity, reducing system performance.

Green walls retain an average of 55% of the rainwater [1], delaying the emission of surplus water into the rainwater pipelines, reducing the risk of flooding. The water holding capacity depends on the type of growing medium.

Biodiversity

average rating is 3 out of 5

Biodiversity

The installation of green roofs makes it possible to compensate for the loss of green spaces resulting from the construction of buildings. It provides a natural habitat for birds, insects and other microorganisms. Although it is important to encourage the integration of several vegetation types [1].

Notes

Urban benefits are only significant in large-scale projects or when combined with other urban green spaces.

In order to recognize the importance of green spaces, several government entities around the world have been developing financing and implementation support strategies, including in Portugal. Here are some of the incentive policies currently in force https://www.greenroofs.pt/pt/mapa-politicas.

Cost-Benefit Analysis

average rating is 3 out of 5

The cost-benefit analysis represents the weighting between the costs and potential benefits resulting from the selected system in a period of 40 to 55 years.

Notes

Good! Your project has a significant area. It is possible that you will benefit from discounts on installation, but check with your supplier afterwards. Here are some suggestions from national suppliers https://www.greenroofs.pt/pt/members

Attention! In case of a roof rehabilitation, unforeseen costs may occur due to, for example the structure reinforcement, waterproofing replacement, etc. It is recommended to perform a building survey previous to the installation to evaluate the property conditions.

Since the roof is accessible, increased costs may occur with the addition of  pathways, benches or other elements. Also maintenance costs may vary depending on the intensity of use.
